Getting Therapy @ Home

Our little one started his autism journey with ABA at home. ABA ( Applied Behavioral Analysis) was recommended to us by his Developmental Pediatrician at the Marcus Autism Center in Atlanta. A recommendation of ABA is typically coupled with a referral for speech, and occupational therapy after the diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder. We called countless ABA companies but many of the waisting list were 6-8 months long. There was no way I was going to allow 6 months to pass before I was able to have our child start services. Early intervention is key and I refused to loose precious time. Let me be clear right now. I am not trying to cure my child’s autism as I do not believe there is a cure. We understand that this is a lifelong diagnosis, as his parents it is our duty to give him as many tools possible to help him excel in life. We understand that not everyone will agree on ABA as a viable therapy for ASD and that is ok. I say again, do what works for you. As I was saying… After touring an ABA facility, that I will let remain nameless , we knew that in clinic therapy was not for us. We appreciate the more natural environment, play therapy approach to ABA. We also wanted to be very involved in his therapeutic plan and that involves hands on training. We found an ABA company that was exactly what we were looking for. Once we met Parker’s BCBA we knew right away that this was the place that could provide what we needed. I began to turn an extra room in our home into a therapy room. I bought all the things! I wanted to provide and environment that was conducive to all of Parker’s sensory needs. A tour of the sensory room coming up in our next blog!
